Weekend Recap

It was a full 4-show weekend for Heather & Marty:

Thursday we participated in the Converge Business After Hours event at the Effingham Performance Center. The event was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce to promote small businesses in the area. We set up a booth and demoed our "product" along with 8 other vendors.

Here are some pictures from the event: Converge Event

Friday we played at Village Wine & Gifts, one of our regular stops.

Saturday we entertained the Effingham High School class of 1965 at the Elks club. We know a lot of songs from that era but learned a few more for the occasion. Listen for our version of "The Sound of Silence" at the next show.

Sunday we volunteered at the Effingham County Humane Society's "Tapas Tasting" at Tuscan Hills Winery. The fundraiser featured 14 local cooks showcasing their favorite dishes with us providing entertainment. We sold 15 copies of our "Back Me & You" CDs and donated the proceeds to the Human Society.

That's it for now. Hope to see you this weekend!

Thanks!

Lake House Sunday, Weddings/Receptions, iTunes

Lake House Sunday Evening!

Hi, everyone!

Have you been out to the Lake House in Vandalia yet? If not, this is your chance to enjoy a fine dinner, a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and music by Heather & Marty! We're playing from 5-8 pm this Sunday. Check out the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1472616286368984/.

Wedding Music: The Cocktail Hour

Have you been to a wedding lately? Chances are, you have! If you weren't the bride, groom, or part of the wedding party, you probably experienced the lull between the time you arrived at the reception and the time the wedding party arrived. This isn't always the most comfortable time for guests at a wedding reception, and there's something you can do about it!

We love playing during the cocktail hour at wedding receptions, and there are certain benefits for guests when we play. Here is how the experience plays out:

After the wedding, your guests enter the reception venue greeted by live guitar and vocal music from Heather & Marty. Instantly they know this is not your standard wedding reception. The inviting softness of the music sets the tone for what is to come.

As the guests make their way to the refreshment area and later their tables, the music keeps the energy up and the mood festive. The conversation flows as they listen to a mix of jazz, pop and country standards spanning nearly the entire 20th century. Time seems to rush by as they wait for the bride and groom to finish wedding pictures and make their grand entrance.

With dinner the music tempo is slower, the room quieter and the food even more delicious!

As the guests gradually finish dinner and the conversation slows, the music becomes a pleasant distraction with guests discussing favorite songs. The tempo increases as the anticipation builds until finally the wedding party signals they are ready to pay tribute to the bride and groom. The party has started!

Village Wine Friday, iTunes, & group guitar lessons

Hi, everyone!

How was your 4th of July weekend? We had a great time at the Hello Dave shows! Perfect weather and big crowds. I'll include a few pictures in the next newsletter.

Heather & I stayed 3 nights in the Geneva Lake WI area. Didn't have much extra time for vacation but we did get in a fair amount of walking and site-seeing. There is a path around the entire 21-mile lake and Friday we went for a long walk around the shoreline.

Next we'd planned a boat ride with some friends but the engine overheated and was towed back to the dock. We ended up hanging out in the parked boat for a couple hours enjoying the perfect weather. The water was really choppy from the holiday traffic, so we weren't disappointed to be sitting still watching the other boats getting bounced around.

Saturday we walked around the town of Lake Geneva doing some shopping. We stopped in at Geneva Java for coffee (we pronounced it Jenny Vajava). Out front were a couple artists doing caricature drawings and of course we had to get one. What do you think??

Here's what's going on this week:

Friday, July 10th - Heather & Marty at Village Wine and Gifts. 7-10 pm

Check out the event HERE.

We're on iTunes!

2 Hello Dave shows & lots of Pictures!

HELLO DAVE THIS WEEKEND!

Hi, everyone!

Before Heather and I started our duo, I played full-time with Chicago band Hello Dave. I joined in 2006 and we had a great run touring the country and recording our original Midwestern rock & roll. Check us out on iTunes. The HD touring machine slowed in 2010 and now we only get together for a few shows per year. But when we do, they're super-fun!

For example, last year we helped out with the James Foley Scholarship Concert at the Vic Theatre in Chicago  (HERE are a few pictures from that night). And in February we opened for Kid Rock at a Super Bowl party in Tempe AZ.

This weekend there are two such Hello Dave shows!

If you happen to be in northern IL or planning a road trip we'll be rockin' & rollin' on Friday and Saturday.

Friday July 3rd - Hello Dave at  "A Mid Summer's Night on the Farm!" in Hebron IL. - 8:30pm

Saturday July 4th - Hello Dave in St. Charles, IL. at Pottawatomie Park - before the Fireworks - 7pm

Pictures? We got pictures!

Heather & Marty are having the busiest summer ever. I think we played 9 shows in June (including 2 wedding ceremonies)!

Here are pictures from a few of the shows:

With Hello Dave front-man Mike Himebaugh at Tuscan Hills Winery

Patio Party at the Holiday Inn

I hope you made it out to the Moccasin Creek Festival this past weekend. It was a huge success!

Here are some shots from our set:

And here we are backing up our friend Greg Klyma during his set:

The next Heather & Marty show will be at The Village Wine Shop in Effingham on July 10th.

Show pics! Lake House Sunday

Hi everyone,

Hope you're having a great start to your week.

The Mike Himebaugh/Heather & Marty show on Sunday was a big success!

Heather & Marty with Mike Himebaugh at the Stellar Cellar

Heather & Marty with Mike Himebaugh at the Stellar Cellar

A BIG thank you to everyone that came and those that helped spread the word. And special thanks to promoter Bill Passalacqua. Bill brings high-quality original music events to the Effingham area. Especially the Sunday micro-concerts at The Stellar Cellar and his own Moccasin Creek Festival in late June. I'm already thinking about when we can do this again!

Heather & I opened with a set of our songs from the "Back to Me & You" CD, and 3 brand new ones: "Harmony", "Can't Help Myself" and the haunting ballad "Addie Lee" about Heather's great-great grandma.

Next, Mike played a solo set featuring his newer material and several acoustic Hello Dave songs. To say he's is a dynamic performer with great songs and an incredible tenor voice doesn't do him justice. Mike connects with an audience better than anyone I've ever played with - period. I couldn't sum it up any better than that. He's completely at ease in front of an audience and the listeners seem to reflect the positive energy back at him.

The 3 of us then closed the show with an hour of classic Hello Dave material. It was really, really fun! Can't say much more than that! :-)

Heather wraps up the song with a jump--in HEELS! Rock on, Heather!!

Fri, patio party at Effingham KC Hall

Hi everyone,

Have you seen the new patio at the Effingham KC Hall? I'm pretty sure it's the only outdoor bar in town.

Most people assume the KC hall is a private club specializing in wedding receptions and BINGO. That's not the case, everyone is welcome. Steve Martin and the rest of the KC crew are hoping a Friday night music series on the patio will help spread the word! And you can help by hanging out with Heather & Marty this Friday!

Mike Himebaugh with Heather & Marty @Tuscan Hills Winery!

Hello again everyone!

We have a very special announcement for you today. Heather & Marty will once again be performing along with our old friend Mike Himebaugh, frontman of Chicago original rock band Hello Dave

Tickets are available NOW! $12 advance, $15 door

Marty joined Hello Dave in 2006. The band has toured the Midwest and continues to play occasional shows. Marty played guitar on the band's last album, entitled "Chicago Twang." Check out the song "Ona Mae" for a sample of what Marty & Hello Dave crafted together. In fact, I just remembered we made this video of the solo being recorded! Check it out!

You can check out Hello Dave on Facebook and watch several videos of the band as well as Himebaugh himself on their YouTube channel

We love playing Tuscan Hills Winery, and The Stellar Cellar is really something to see! If you haven't enjoyed a glass of wine (or beer, or spirits - they do have more than just wine!) and watched a performance there, now is your chance! To get a feel for what The Stellar Cellar is all about, check out these pics of the recent Chicago Farmer/Bill Poss show, which by the way was excellent!

Check out the event on Facebook, and don't forget to order your tickets early!

Open Mic Wed., Holiday Inn Sat., Lake House Sunday

Hello everyone,

We had a busy weekend! How about you? The rain didn't get in our way on Saturday, as you'll see.. and it shaped up to be a nice day at the Lake House on Sunday.

Here's what's happening this week:

Wednesday, April 29th -

Heather & Marty at Songwriter Open Mic at Village Wine

8:30pm (15 min. set)

Saturday, May 2nd -

Heather & Marty at Holiday Inn Effingham.

7-9pm. Reservations: 217-540-7777

Check it out HERE!

Sunday, May 3rd -

Vandalia Lake House 4-7pm (reservations: 618-283-9629)

How about that cold rain on Saturday? The show had to go on at Vahling Vineyards Spring Fest, and despite the drizzle everyone had a great time! Our friendly neighborhood event/music/commercial photographer Casey Tibbs (aka image squared marketing, inc.) was there to get some photos, and you can check those out on his Facebook. Sometimes you have to find the beauty in things, and I think everyone at Vahling Spring Fest did that on Saturday!

Last Sunday Heather, her brother David and I stopped by the Lake House in Vandalia to listen to Ronny Lee perform with his lovely wife Jolie. I've been friends with Ron for a long time and we've played together many times. He usually performs solo so it was a special treat to hear Ron and Jolie together.

If you're looking for something to do we highly recommend visiting the Lake House. It's easy to find on Rt. 185 next to Vandalia lake. They have great food, atmosphere and live music every Sunday afternoon. We enjoyed it so much, we're going back this Sunday to perform! We'll see you there!

That's it for now. Hope to see you this weekend!

Thanks,

Marty

Lion's Liquors, The Office, & Vahling Spring Festival

Hi everyone!

What happened to our awesome weather? Heather and I went for a 3 hour walk around Effingham Saturday night. We didn't really plan to stay out that long but it was so enjoyable we just kept going. How'd you spend your weekend?

Here's what's up this week:

Thursday, April 23rd - Heather and Marty at Lions Liquors in Effingham  7-9 pm. Check it out HERE!

Thursday, April 23rd - Marty at The Office Pub in Effingham with Kyle and Adam. Loud instrumental set 10-11 pm. Check THIS out!

Saturday, April 25th - Heather & Marty at Vahling Vineyards Spring Festival  12:30-3:30 pm. Learn more HERE!

And remember, we'll be at Moccasin Creek Festival again this year. The event is on June 27th. Don't miss this opportunity to hear original music by local musicians and national touring acts. Be sure to check out the Lineup and Buy Tickets before they sell out!

In case you missed it, we debuted our new duet "Harmony" at Village Wine last Friday. It went pretty well, considering I had to sing lead on half of it, and we got a lot of positive feedback. It has kind of a funky beat (as our musician friends would say) and I need to spend more time coordinating the vocal and guitar together.

Have you been to the newly remodeled Austin Mansion in Effingham? I played solo guitar there Saturday afternoon for a bridal shower. It's super nice! I highly recommend it to anyone with an upcoming event. Here are some pics from Saturday.

That's all for now. Hope to see you this weekend!

Thanks,

Marty

Hi everyone!

Friday, April 17th - Heather & Marty at Village Wine and Gifts. 7-10 pm. Join the event HERE!

The event is on June 27th. Don't miss this opportunity to hear original music by both local musicians and national touring acts. Go HERE to find the line-up and ticket information.

Songwriting

Heather & I have been making a lot of progress with our songwriting. We recently completed a 6 week internet course offered through Berklee College of Music with Professor Pat Pattison. WOW! We both learned so much. Pat's class gave us tools to help with songwriting that seem like common sense and are easy to apply. The mark of a good teacher! I took 39 pages of notes that have already become an invaluable resource with our writing and in helping my students with their songs.

Speaking of new songs! We'll be debuting a brand new duet on Friday at the Village Wine shop. It's called "Harmony" and here's the story: I came up with some chord changes and a melody a couple months ago. After playing it for a while, I somehow got the idea it could be about a girl that walks into a nightclub and falls in love with the singer on stage. He also notices her and they start trading musical lines creating a story. The trick is they can't hear what each other is saying -- only the audience gets both sides of the conversation. Similar to a love scene in a Broadway musical. Are you confused? I gave the idea to Heather and she did a great job with the lyrics. Hope you like it!

Supercross

A couple weekends ago we went to our first supercross race in St. Louis. I watch the series every week but it was a lot more intense live! We're already planning to go to the Indy race next year.

In the 450cc main event, series points leader Ryan Dungey started 1st and won by a pretty wide margin. But Eli Tomac was fun to watch. He started 7th and mounted a charge through the field winding up 2nd. Eli was quickly closing in on Ryan but ran out of time.

Springtime, Open Mic on Wednesday, and Holiday Inn on Saturday

Hi everyone!

What do you think of the beautiful weather??? One of my favorite things is taking long dog walks with my chihuahua Ryan.

I live in the country so there's plenty of interesting trails nearby but when it's cold, poor Ryan hardly ever gets to leave the yard. I always intend to go walking, but you know how it goes.

Here's what's coming up this week:

Wednesday, March 18th - Heather & Marty at Village Wine and Gifts open mic. - 9:45 pm (15 min. set)

Wednesday, March 18th - Marty at Ichabods open mic. - 10:30 pm (30 min. set of instrumentals with Kyle and Adam)

Saturday, March 21st - Heather & Marty at the Effingham Holiday Inn. 7-9 pm (dinner set - all ages)

It's been a while since our last update but we've been working every weekend at various events and parties. We really like cocktail/dinner type gigs because they're always different and often challenging.

At a wedding reception recently, 10 minutes before showtime we were asked by the bride and mother-in-law if we new 3 Beatles songs. Only one did we actually know but had heard the other two countless times. With veins overflowing in ice water, I casually said "sure, we can play those." These songs had been part of the ceremony and they were hoping to dance to them at the reception. This would be a special moment if would could make it happen!

We quickly grabbed the guitar and found a rehearsal room. Using our phones we googled the lyrics and chord changes and after a couple run-thrus felt like we had decent arrangements. When the big moment came everything went well and our clients were super happy. Success!!!

That's all for now. Hope to see you this week!

Marty

Heather & Marty @ ALIS fundraiser - Saturday 5-7pm

Hi everyone!

Here's what's up this weekend for Heather & Marty:

**************************************

Sat. Feb. 14th - Altamont Lutheran Interparish School fundraiser auction.  5-7 pm. (social hour)

At the beautiful new Carriage House Event Center in Altamont.

*************************

Only one show this weekend! Feels kind of nice to have only one show. Compared to the last 2 weeks, that's a vacation!

I actually like having a lot of things to do because:

   A) That means I'm working and usually enjoying what I'm doing.

   B) It makes any time off feel even more refreshing.

Friday Heather & I had a really fun show at Village Wine. Had a great, attentive audience and saw lots of familiar faces from the Effingham area. And it was super cool to see people we know from the surrounding counties make the trip.

I'm especially thankful to have the Village Wine shop and Tuscan Hills Winery as local music venues. I grew up playing late night bar and dance hall gigs several nights per week and unfortunately most of those venues are gone or can't afford entertainment. About the same time the gigs started drying up I was tired of the 9 pm - 1 am grind and ready to move on. People that enjoy wine seem to go to bed earlier. That's a big plus!

Saturday afternoon was my guitar clinic at Chesnut Music. It went so well I'm already planning the next one!

Mostly I talked about the Nashville Number System, demonstrating typical chord progressions and key changes. The number system is how charts are written for Nashville studio musicians. It really speeds up the song learning and recording process. Once understood it can be a true revelation and I saw a couple "aha!" moments in the audience. That was my goal!

Here's a video of me, Kyle and Adam taking a ride on the "Orange Blossom Special"!

Saturday evening I had a student show at Village Wine. It was all adults with previous experience - and I couldn't be more proud of how well they did! Everyone played and sang a wide variety of songs both as soloists ( very hard to do!) and with accompaniment from me and other students.

The lineup was:

Richard Rudy

Kelly Stanfield

Monday Heather & I traveled all the way back to Tuscan Hills winery (about 15 minutes from where I live) to entertain at a corporate event. Local cabinet factory Stevens Industries held a dealer meeting and hired us for the wine-and-dine portion.

We LOVE playing these type events! Our song selection and the ambiance we provide is a perfect fit for cocktails and dinner. Over the years I've noticed music can give people something to talk about when the conversation stalls. How many times have you been at a party or reception sitting with strangers - and the room seems to go awkwardly silent...?

Village Wine Fri., Feb. 6th & guitar clinic Sat., Feb 7th

Hi everyone!

Here's what's up for this weekend:

**************************************

Fri., Feb. 6th - Heather & Marty at Village Wine and Gifts. 7-10 pm

Sat. Feb. 7th - Guitar Clinic at Chesnut Family Music in Effingham. 2 pm

Sat. Feb. 7th - Student Show at Village Wine and Gifts. 7-10 pm
(featuring 5 of my adult guitar students singing and playing)

I'm really looking forward to the guitar clinic! I did one many years ago at Samuel Music in Effingham. At the time it was super-terrifying for me but once it started I enjoyed it.

Bassist Adam Burtch and drummer Kyle Heynen will be accompanying me. We'll play several instrumentals and I'll discuss chords, keys, demonstrate some songwriting techniques and answer audience questions.

We'll be showcasing locally built J. Chester amplifiers.

Hope you had a great weekend! Mine was long but also a lot of fun.

Thursday I had a student show at Joe Sippers with some of my guitar students that like to play and sing. We've had 26 of these shows in the past 3 years with probably a couple dozen students. Each performer sings and plays several songs. The idea is to get them the valuable experience they need to feel comfortable at an open-mic or any other live situation.

Public speaking is supposed to be the most terrifying thing but I think solo performing with a guitar and voice is whole new level. It's a cool thing to watch as they progress! Some of the adults have moved on to playing real gigs making real money!

Saturday I flew to Phoenix AZ. with my Chicago band Hello Dave to play a super bowl party for sandwich king Jimmy John. He's a big fan of the band and hires us to play occasional corporate events. The line-up was Hello Dave, Sophistaphunk & Kid Rock. (Yes, I said KR!) The venue was the Culinary Dropout restaurant in Scottsdale and we played outside on a big rock & roll style stage. Everyone with the Kid Rock crew was super accommodating and it went as smooth as you could hope.

We really liked Sophistafunk. They're a trio but the instrumentation is just drums and keys with a frontman/rapper. Keyboard player Adam does an incredible job of filling up the mix! He literally sounds like 3 people playing when he adds in a vocal. Kid Rock put on a great show and his band is top notch as you'd expect.

Sunday was travel day back to Effingham. I had an 11 am. flight to Indy but thanks to the "fog of the century" in Phoenix, we were delayed for 3.5 hours. I was actually lucky because the rest of the band was flying to Chicago and barely made it home because of a huge blizzard with strong winds! They were delayed forever and were one of the few flights that was able to get through.

Monday Heather and I played our first ever Groundhog Day Party at Spankys in Mattoon. They had the movie Groundhog Day playing repeatedly (of course!) on the screens. We had fun entertaining the pool league and giving out trivia prizes. Hope we do the gig next year, and ...over...and over...and over...

Heather & Marty - Tuscan Hills Winery & guitar clinic

Hi everyone,

Hope you're having a great 2015! Heather and I sure are. We had our busiest and most productive year ever in 2014. Typically January is the slow season for entertainment and we've enjoyed some needed time off.

Last weekend we played our first gig of the year at the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Recognition Gala. This is a fun event for us because we get to play for and hang out with about 700 really well-dressed people and eat some great food. Congratulations to Craig Lindvahl who was selected as the 2014 Citizen of the Year. He really deserves it for what he's accomplished with his teaching career.

Merry Christmas from Heather & Marty!

Merry Christmas music fans!

Heather and I have been very fortunate this holiday season. We've played a lot of Christmas parties, receptions, wine tastings and banquets -- our favorite types of gigs!

It's been 3.5 years (or so) since we started our little duo and this has been by far the best year. We thank everyone for coming to the shows, hiring and recommending us for gigs and buying our original music. Thanks!

I've also played several solo guitar Christmas parties and that's something I always enjoy.

***********************************************

Speaking of solo guitar....

Saturday Dec. 13th -  I'll be playing solo Christmas tunes at MFred's Guitars & Guns in Mattoon
from 1-3 pm.

I'll have copies of both my instrumental Christmas CD's for sale.

***********************************************

Speaking of Christmas CD's....

My CD's Christmas at My House Vol. 1 & 2 as well as the Heather & Marty CD are available for purchase at Chesnut Family Music store in Effingham. They make GREAT stocking stuffers!
